After graduation, Sylvie was looking for a new opportunity.

Previously, she’d had a great experience travelling to Mexico and had moved back to France, this time settling in Angers, nearby her hometown. However, she wanted to have another international adventure, as well as improve her English skills. Applying for a European Solidarity Corps placement was her next step towards this.

In volunteering, her primary goal was to be (and feel!) useful. Since she started her placement with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Wales in September 2019, she has had many opportunities to work with Welsh organisations.

The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Wales is one of the oldest youth organisations in Wales, working with young people since 1928. Grant Poiner, chief operating officer, says:

As an organisation, we enjoy hosting European Solidarity Corps volunteers such as Sylvie, as they are able to informally educate young people within our network of clubs.

Staying safe online

Sylvie has supported children and young people, some with disabilities. She has visited youth clubs around Cardiff, informing and interacting with them on educational themes such as staying safe on the internet, football against racism, and crafts.

“I work with children aged five to 15 years old, and every time the experience is different. I have started to build relationships with the children, and they look out for me (at the youth centres).”

I feel already that I have made a positive impact.

Poiner says that Sylvie has been very helpful in her activities.

“Sylvie has become a great member of our team of workers and volunteers who are supporting youth clubs in Wales. She has played an important role in helping young people develop new skills and abilities.”

In the future, Sylvie would like to be a lawyer or join the police force. For now, the French volunteer says she needs more time to explore the opportunities provided by her placement, and is enjoying various aspects of this experience already.

“I am learning about another way of life – the food and culture is different, and I am enjoying discovering new things.”

Sylvie Colas

Mae Sylvie Colas yn dod o Poitiers yng Ngorllewin Ffrainc. Mae hi'n cymryd rhan mewn gweithgarwch y Corfflu Cydsefyll Ewropeaidd fel gwirfoddolwr tymor hir gyda Chlybiau Bechgyn a Merched Cymru.

Ar ôl graddio, roedd Sylvie yn chwilio am gyfle newydd.  Yn flaenorol, roedd hi wedi cael profiad gwych yn teithio i Fecsico, ac roedd wedi symud yn ôl i Ffrainc, gan setlo yn Angers y tro hwn, gerllaw ei thref enedigol.  Fodd bynnag, roedd hi'n dymuno mynd ar antur ryngwladol arall, yn ogystal â gwella ei sgiliau Saesneg.  Ymgeisio am leoliad gyda'r Corfflu Cydsefyll Ewropeaidd oedd ei cham nesaf tuag at hyn.

Wrth wirfoddoli, ei phrif nod oedd bod (a theimlo!) o ddefnydd.  Ers iddi ddechrau ar ei lleoliad gyda Chlybiau Bechgyn a Merched Cymru ym mis Medi 2019, mae hi wedi cael sawl cyfle i weithio gyda sefydliadau yng Nghymru.

Mae Clybiau Bechgyn a Merched Cymru yn un o'r sefydliadau ieuenctid hynaf yng Nghymru, ac mae wedi bod yn gweithio gyda phobl ifanc er 1928.

“Fel sefydliad, rydym yn mwynhau croesawu gwirfoddolwyr o'r Corfflu Cydsefyll Ewropeaidd fel Sylvie, gan eu bod yn gallu addysgu pobl ifanc mewn ffordd anffurfiol yn ein rhwydwaith o glybiau,” dywedodd Grant Poiner, prif swyddog gweithredol.

Cadw'n ddiogel ar-lein

Mae Sylvie wedi cynorthwyo plant a phobl ifanc, rhai ohonynt gydag anableddau.  Mae hi wedi ymweld â chlybiau ieuenctid o gwmpas Caerdydd, gan eu hysbysu a rhyngweithio gyda nhw ar themâu addysgol megis bod yn ddiogel ar y rhyngrwyd, pêl-droed yn erbyn hiliaeth, a chrefftau.

“Rydw i'n gweithio gyda phlant rhwng pump a 15 oed, ac mae'r profiad yn wahanol bob tro.  Rydw i wedi dechrau meithrin perthnasoedd gyda'r plant, ac maent yn cadw golwg amdanaf (yn y canolfannau ieuenctid)).”

“Rydw i'n teimlo fy mod i wedi cael effaith gadarnhaol yn barod.”

Dywedodd Poiner bod Sylvie wedi bod o gymorth mawr yn ei gweithgareddau.

“Mae Sylvie wedi dod yn aelod gwych o'n tîm o weithwyr a gwirfoddolwyr sy'n cynorthwyo clybiau ieuenctid yng Nghymru.  Mae hi wedi cyflawni rôl pwysig wrth helpu pobl ifanc i feithrin sgiliau a galluoedd newydd.”

Yn y dyfodol, hoffai Sylvie fod yn gyfreithiwr neu ymuno â'r heddlu.  Am nawr, mae'r gwirfoddolwr o Ffrainc yn dweud bod angen mwy o amser arni i archwilio'r cyfleoedd a gynigir iddi gan ei lleoliad, ac mae'n mwynhau agweddau amrywiol ar y profiad hwn yn barod.

“Rydw i'n dysgu am ffordd o fyw arall – mae'r bwyd a'r diwylliant yn wahanol, ac rydw i'n mwynhau darganfod pethau newydd.”
